A Process for Designing
Performance Assessment Tasks

Step 8: Making Decisions About Scoring

Making Decisions About Scoring

  • What is the purpose of this performance assessment task: diagnostic; formative, summative?
  • What scoring tool(s) are most appropriate given the assessment purpose?
  • What will be involved in using the scoring tool(s) for evaluation (teachers, external scorers, students, others)?

As part of your school's school improvement efforts, scores from performance tasks may need to be collected and analyzed to determine areas of need. By tracking student achievement relative to specific learning indicators, schools can focus their staff development and instructional planning efforts where appropriate.

The scoring process from these assessments also serves as a form of professional development as teachers can clearly see where students have difficulty and where they may need to modify their instructional process for a given strategy. Finally, by engaging students in the scoring process, they become more aware of the criteria and how that criteria is used to assess their work.
