Dear Families,

Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year here at Kenmoor Middle School. Our academic program challenges and prepares students for high school and beyond.  Classroom instruction promotes problem solving and higher-order thinking and skill development in all students.  We also offer advanced classes for our highly motivated, well prepared students that earn them high school credits.  Kenmoor Middle School received state recognition as the only middle school in Prince George’s County to receive the “Excellence in Gifted and Talented Education” (E-Gate) award and designation as a model program.

            Our teachers are certified and well trained in their subject areas and have high expectations for every student.  Every student is required to be respectful, well behaved and exercise self-discipline at all times.  Successful students complete two (2) hours of homework, reading and studying every night, attend school daily, well rested and ready to put forth their best effort.

            Early in the school year we will be introducing a new “Positive Behavior Intervention Support” (PBIS) program that rewards students for good grades, regular attendance, respectful and excellent behavior as well as compliance with the student dress code.  Opportunities abound for the “whole child” at Kenmoor Middle School.  We offer interscholastic sports, chess, math, art and philosophy clubs, as well as a chapter of the National Junior Honor Society, Student Government Association and Destination Imagination teams.  We host winning debate, science bowl, geography bee, spelling bee, robotics, future cities and knowledge master open teams.

            New seventh and eighth grade student orientation will take place on Thursday, August 18^th from 9:30 am until 12:45 pm this will be a great opportunity for students who are new to Kenmoor to become familiar with the school building, their teachers and their daily schedule.  You will receive information by mail about your students’ bus schedule from transportation or you can call 301-952-6570.  The first official day of school for all students will be Monday, August 22, 2011.  Our school hours are 9:30 am – 4:10 pm and our doors open at 9:10 am daily at which time adult supervision begins.  Breakfast and lunch are served daily at a cost of $1.50 for breakfast and $2.75 for lunch.  We hope to see you at Back to School Night on September 1, 2011, from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm.

            I am excited to quote the Gazette news service which touted Kenmoor Middle School as making the “biggest leap among schools” on the Maryland School Assessment test scores.

  Congratulations to our students who performed so well and set a high bar of attainment for our 2011-2012 classes.  Once again, I want to state that every student can be successful at Kenmoor MS and we expect every student to learn and earn good grades every quarter.  In other words excel to the best of their ability!
