Arrival & Dismissal Procedures

ARRIVAL AT SCHOOL

Please remember that classes begin at 7:45am.  Children entering the building (other than by a late arriving school bus) will be marked tardy and a parent or guardian must sign-in at the main office.  Students are not to be dropped off before 7:20am.  There will be no one to supervise children at that time.  Students may arrive at school at 7:20am. and line up at the front of the building.  If you transport your child to school by car, please turn into the semii-circle and pull up along the school sidewalk in order to drop your child off where a staff member will be waiting until 7:50am.  Please do not park here.  Your child can then proceed to the entrance.  For safety reasons, the semi-circular car lane will be closed to cars until 1:45 p.m. or Administrators discretion. Students will be admitted at 7:30 a.m.  Breakfast program will begin at 7:20am until 7:45am.  If your child arrives at 7:40am (unless a bus is late), they will not receive breakfast.  In the event of inclement weather (precipitation or temperatures below 32 degrees F), all students will be admitted to the building prior to 7:30 a.m.

DISMISSAL

Walkers and car riders are dismissed after 1:50pm. Bus students are dismissed beginning at 1:55 p.m. so they can board buses and leave the grounds as soon as they are loaded.  For student’s safety, car riders must pick-up students from the semi-circular drive. If you are entering the building for any reason during bus dismissal, please park in the side parking.  We recommend that car riders be loaded from the passenger's side of any vehicle.  A staff member will be present to help supervise your child as he/she enters your vehicle.  Some parents prefer to park and meet their children.  In the interest of safety, no child will be permitted to cross into the parking lot unless accompanied by an adult, unless he/she crosses at the corner where a crossing guard is in attendance.  Please be patient during the first week of school, because students are learning new routines and dismissal takes much longer.  By the fourth week of school, routines are generally established and departure occurs in a much more timely fashion.

 SAFETY OF STUDENTS

If your child rides the bus, please remember that the school system does not have the facilities for monitoring bus stop behavior.  It is the parents responsibility.  Bus drivers will monitor behavior of riders as best they can while paying attention to traffic and driving.  Volunteer student bus patrols serve on each bus.  If a problem occurs on the bus, the bus driver will write a discipline referral and the principal or assistant principal will confer with the student to resolve the problem.  Riding the bus is a privilege and bus suspension can occur if a student exhibits behavior problems on the bus. For walkers, a crossing guard is posted at Dorset Road.

Students riding bicycles to school must have written permission on file in the office and live within the community identified as students who walk to and from school each day.  Scotchtown Hills Elementary School takes no responsibility for stolen bikes.  There are bicycle racks in the front of the school. STUDENTS SHOULD LOCK THEIR BICYCLES.

EARLY DEPARTURES

Please send a note if you will be picking up your child before 1:30 p.m. or if someone other than the parent or guardian will be picking up your child.  We encourage you to pick your child up before 1:30pm, so that we will be able to focus on bus dismissal and end-of-the-day routines.  If you come after 1:30pm, you will have to wait until after bus dismissal to receive your child.  For safety reasons, we will not be able to release students to persons other than the parent or legal guardian without a note from you.
