Art
Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up. ~Pablo Picasso

Art Awareness
sponsored by the PTA

Our art teacher is Ms. Vandersommers

Tulip Grove shares Ms. Vandersommers with two other elementary schools in Bowie, Maryland.  But our students still have art about four times a year.  The art projects always incorporate art into the core subjects, such as Social Studies, Science, Math, and English.

Art Awareness

The PTA's art awareness program provides art enrichment at Tulip Grove.  The lessons are designed and taught entirely by parent volunteers.

Each lesson, based on a poster of a famous piece of art, includes information about the artist, the style or period represented, and specific art concepts or techniques used by the artist.  The students then do an art project based on the famous piece.

Stained -Glass

Louis Comfort Tiffany
2009-10

A poster of "Vase of Flowers" introduced our students to the translucent art of Louis Comfort Tiffany.  Tiffany was an American artists and designer who was known for his work in stained glass, particularly lampshades.  The students created their own mini-stained glass widows using clear vinyl, Sharpie markers, and tissue paper.

Printmaking

Andy Warhol
2009-10

The students learned about American "Pop" artist, Andy Warhol, who used common everyday images such as Campbell's soup cans, comic strip characters, and movie starts as subject matter for his art work.  Andy Warhol used the process of silkreen printmaking to mass produce his art work.  The students used a different form of printmaking which involved the creation of a master plate (in this case, Styrofoam) on which they etched an image, applied ink, and pressed paper onto the plate with a brayer.

Quiltmaking

The quiltmakers of Gee's Bend
2009-10

Our students were impressed by the resourcefulness of the African-American women of Gee's Bend, Alabama, who passed down, for many generations, a unique and sophisticated quilting style.  The women of Gee's Bend sewed, by hand, old clothing and linen into fine art quilts.  In the tradition of the Gee's Bend quiltmakers, the students took old clothing and linens to create a "no sew" quilt square which was assembled into a large classroom quilt.  Some of the individual squares are shown below.

Art Awareness need volunteers!

Tulip Grove's Art Awareness program provides art enrichment to all the students at Tulip Grove.

Please help this valuable program continue by giving a few hours of your time to present a lesson or two to your child's class next year.

  • No artistic talent or teaching experience necessary
  • Hand-on training cheerfully provided
  • Lesson plans designed for you
  • Art supplies provided
  • Great fun!  Enriching for the instructors as well as the students.

The committee is losing several of its instructors next year as their children move on to different schools.  New instructors must be found if we are to be able to provide the lessons to all of Tulip Grove's students!

Illuminated Letters

The Book of Kells

Using the Book of Kells as an example, students will learn how the process was done in medieval times -- scraping hide to make parchment, and grinding gems and minerals to create colors.  Each child will get a sheet of parchment, create an elaborate first initial and write their name, in the style of The Book of Kells, using markers and a gold ink pen for the illumination and decoration.

The Scream

Using The Scream by Edvard Munch and the book, The Great Blueness and Other Predicaments by Arnold Lobel, students will realize how the emotions of a color and the strokes of a line will give a picture "feeling".   Then students will use oil pastels/craypas to create an emotional picture.
