History of Walker Mill Middle School

Approximately nine hundred students and a professional staff of forty-five opened Walker Mill Junior High School in September 1970 as a Capitol Heights neighborhood school.

The school, dedicated in 1972, was named for the old Walker Mill that stood at what is now the eastern end of Walker Mill Road near Ritchie Road.  The mill was one of the last water-powered grist mills to operate in Prince George's County.  Charles Walker acquired the property from the Berry's of nearby Concord shortly after the Civil War.  He operated the mill until it burned down in 1920.

Since the school doors opened, many changes have occurred. In 1973, school boundaries were redrawn and students from Camp Springs were enrolled at Walker Mill.  In 1983, Walker Mill reorganized and became a middle school. In 1985, Walker Mill Middle School was selected to be a Prince George's County first, a Talented and Gifted Magnet School. 

The magnet program attracted 250 southern area TAG students.  Due to the closing of Benjamin Foulois Middle School in 1986, our boundaries were once again redrawn and a larger neighborhood community attended Walker Mill. The 2000-2001 school year brought approximately 660 students to Walker Mill. In 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 about 700 students attended our school. The 2003-2004 school year brought about 700 students to Walker Mill.

The year 2004-2005 saw a record 800 students at Walker Mill. They were ready for a great learning experience. For the first time in the school's history, students were wearing uniforms: burgundy polo shirts and khaki pants or skirts for 7th graders and blue shirts and khaki pants or skirts for 8th graders. The students looked so handsome in their new uniforms that many teachers decided to also wear uniforms.

The 2005-2006 school year brought many challenges. The 2006-2007 year saw many changes and ended well under a new administration. The 2007-2008 school year was a successful year because Walker Mill achieved Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). In 2008-2009, Walker Mill again achieved Adequate Yearly Progress and became the only middle school in Prince George's County to leave the School Improvement phase. This year the student population increased and a team of dedicated, excellent teachers joined the faculty. Walker Mill is looking forward to a great school year..
